holiday tradition for thousands of
Detroit families was the annual trek downtown to J.L. Hudson’s 12th
floor, which was Santa Claus’ official Detroit headquarters. Santaland, which
meandered thru one-half acre of floor space, featured dozens of decorated
Christmas trees, thousands of strings of lights and state-of-the-art animated
figures. Every holiday season, over a half million youngsters visited the
fantasy land with the ultimate goal of meeting Christmas Carol and the jolly old
elf himself, Santa Claus.
On
November 24, 1960, CKLW-TV’s Captain Jolly paid a visit to J.L. Hudson’s
Storyland, bringing along a film crew to record the event for his TV shipmates.
The film is the only surviving footage of Toby David as Captain Jolly, and I am
pleased to be able to present it for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
